Background
Triads started life as anti-Manchu resistance during the Qing Dynasty. The official myth says that they were created after the burning of the southern Shaolin temple, by five survivors of the battle. Some claim that one of them was Jee Sin, who was the master of the 5 Elders of Southern Chinese kung fu.
After the fall of the Qing dyansty in the last century, the Triads now found themselves without a purpose and there was a split between the Mainland and overseas branches. The Mainland group is what we now commonly referto as the Triads, while the overseas group became known as the Hongmen.
Nowadays The Hongmen is divided into 180 branches, and is arguably a Freemason-like organization, with an emphasis on patriotism, given the circumstances of its origin. Distinguished politicians such as Sun Yat Sen and Chiang Kai Shek were senior members. It shares traditions with the Triads, since they were one and the same not that far back.

Given name “Zheng Yi Fong” aka “Li Yu” his family moved to Thailand from the Chao An Province in China.
From a young age he had joined the “Hong Meng Tian Di” a secret society active in revolutionary activities against the Qing Dynasty.
Being a charismatic leader he quickly progressed through the ranks to become second in command to Ling Mang. His nickname “Er Ger Fong” literally means 2nd elder Fong. He eventually succeeded Ling Mang but retained the name “Er Ger Fong”

It was during this period that the administration of King Chulalongkorn (Rama 5) was facing economic instability and needed help.
Er Ger Fong was approached for assistance to generate the much needed revenue for the ruling dynasty. His proposition was to tax gambling revenue.
The success of his initiative was mirrored by a similarly successful and flourishing business empire which incorporated many interests such as logistics, real estate, commodities and most importantly gambling dens.
In his later years Er Ger Fong became better known for his charitable work, setting up numerous homes and orphanages for the under privileged. His philanthropic acts were apparently inspired by dream of a Chinese deity known as “Tai Hong Gong”
He passed away in the year 1935 at the age of 87 leaving to the Thai nation all he possessed.
His legacy continues to this day through the Er Ger Fong temple / Joss House located in Yaowarat district of Bangkok (China Town)

This immensely popular shrine was established in Be 2537 by Mr Hia Mao and is well known for its charitable work in helping the less privileged members of society.
As Er Ger Fong is considered as the founder of the gambling industry in Thailand he is often referred to as the ‘Thai Lottery God’. His shrine is popular by those seeking luck in gambling / lottery.
He was the first person who originated gambling in Thailand. He often helped the poor people. Er Ger fong's joss-house is very popular among Thai gamblers.
