The Thai Tattoo is
an ancient art form that has been widely known in Siam
for hundreds of years. Essentially we can divide the
Thai tattoo into three subsections, namely;
a. Soldiers
- used by the military to identify regiments of the
royal army. This practice has now been withdraw
b. Prisoners
– used by the penal service to identify men or women
punished for serious crimes, such as adultery.Tattoos
were actually inked on the face and were designed to
condemn the prisoner for a lifetime.

2. Sacred Tattoos (Sak Yan) |

In years gone by this
type of tattooing was common amongst Thai men as it was
believed that such tattoos would protect them from
danger and in particular harm from weapons.
Only scared monks could apply such
tattoos and today this tradition is still practiced at a
few temples.
It is just unfortunate that
this ancient practice is
doomed to disappear and be replaced by empty aesthetics
of the modern art tattoo?

Obviously the most
popular and modern from of tattooing and has no
particular relevance to this article other than that the
history of tattooing gives an indication of the
evolution of the mindset of humankind through the ages.
The nature of tattoos is now more cosmetic than
ritualistic, as the widespread belief in magic has been
replaced by the importance of looks and individuality
