Maechee Bunreuan Tongboonterm – A highly Sacred Thai Nun

You may be very surprised to learn that some of the most popular amulets in Thailand today were created and blessed by a woman, unique in Thai Buddhist history.

In fact this woman was a sacred nun known as Maechee Bunreuan. At the time of writing you cannot open any amulet magazine that does not contain reference to this sacred nun, or her amulets, such is the strong interest in her.

Kru of Wat Arvutviksitaram

Pratep Punya Muni, abbot of Wat Arvutviksitaram, opened the Kru containing the sacred amulets of of Maechee Bunreuan  and these were introduced to the public.

The Kru contained almost all the pims that have been associated with  Maechee Bunreuan, some in very limited numbers, for example.

Background

Maechee Bunreuan Tongboonterm was born in Minburi province  on the 4^th March, B.E.2437. At the age of 15 she was accepted by her uncle, Luang Phor Pring of Wat Bangpakok, to be educated under his guidance. His influence would have a great affect on her life. Indeed it was at this temple where she first started to learn the science of meditation.

Even after her marriage to Police Sergeant Joi Tongboonterm from Bangkok she often continued to practice meditation at Wat Sumpuntawong, where her husband was later ordained a monk for a period of one year. It was after his resignation as a monk that she made the decision that she wanted to learn about Buddhism and as a result decided to become a nun  (Maechee). She quickly attained t the Patom Yarn, or first level meditation science.

History of Wat Sumpuntawong

Wat Sumpuntawong is an ancient temple that was established during the Ayudhaya Kingdom, near the Chaophrya, about 300 years ago.

During that time, Pra Maha Rachamang Klacharn was abbot.  Maechee Bunreuan was noted to be one of his closest followers, and supported many of his charitable projects including the construction of a new temple, Wat Saranart Dharmaram in Rayong Province.

The new temple was named on January 20^th BE 2490 by HRH Kromluang Vachirayarnvong, who at that time was the Buddhist Patriarch.

It is also recorded that about this time she had reached Jatuta Yarn or 4^th level meditation Science, quite an accomplishment. In effect she had been able to transcend the limits of the human body by mastering her mind, becoming independent of all earthly matter and lusts. Abandonment and abstention of which is a prerequisite of enlightenment.

This achievement in her spiritual evolution was an important event as essentially it carried a profound message and that is all of us can practice meditation regardless of our sex, nationality, religion or ethenticity. All one needs is a human body and the air which we breathe, a universal element shared by the human race.

With this attainment and the connection to the divine her spiritual powers expand considerably. In this new dimension she is able to traverse time and space, helping those in need.

-Buppayniwasa Nusati or the ability to see and experience former lives, to communicate with the supernatural

-Asawuk Kaya Yarn or the sacred power to conquer danger and sorrow, to see beyond that which is obvious. She helps cure many people with illnesses that modern medicine could not.

-Sacred energy to control her surroundings and foresee the future.  

-Astral projection, phenomena that allows the initiated movement through time and space.

The power to manipulate or travel the astral plane, a kind of parallel world was clearly demonstrated when Maechee Bunreuan, aged 33, was known to have mysteriously disappeared from the local police station, appearing at Wat Sumpuntawong, even though the station was firmly locked down at the time.

In the year B.E.2492, Maechee Bunreuan returned to Bangkok where she took up residence in a new house which later was to become known as “Bahn Samukkivisut”, a location where she and her followers would meet to recite sacred spells and work towards a wider understanding and appreciation of the Buddhist faith in Thailand. She received queues of visitors every day, many afflicated with incurable disease. Her sacred power to cure the sick was widely reported.

Much of  her public work was recorded but one event in particular was and still is for many the most important event in recent Buddhist history, and that was the creation and scaralisation of a series of amulets known as Pra Buddho Lek at Wat Arvutviksitaram, Bangkok.

These amulets were blessed on the 11^th-13^th September BE 2494, the first time that a nun had created amulets which incidentally are known today to be filled with her sacred power and are in very high demand.

It was recorded that she had donated

-2,000 amulets to Jao khun Rachmongkolmuni of Wat Sumpuntawong,
-1,000 amulets to the Thai police force
-1,000 amulets to Thai military personnel
-2,000 amulets to worshippers in Lampang and other provinces in northeast Thailand.
-2,000 amulets to local supporters at the blessing ceremony.
-2,000 amulets to followers in Chang Mai province
-A further quantity was donated to Wat Arvutviksitaram, Bangkok.

She was to create further batches, the next being in BE 2498, this series was known as Tung Kiaw Niaw Sap amulets (good-fortune bags) and were created specifically for her followers.

It was in the same year that she re-located to Rayong to practice meditation. It is known that she had requested that her devotees not disturb her for a period of one year as she wanted to develop and enhance her mind power.

Wat Arvutviksitaram today contains many archives of the work that Maechee Bunreuan was involved in.

Creation of Sacred Amulets

From a collectors perspective one of the most important batches that she created was in BE 2499, when on the 4^th-12^th March the amulets were blessed. On this occasion many famous senior monks of the era had gathered to assist in the process and add further sacred power, something never heard of or again since.

Many different types of amulet were blessed including, Pra Buddho Noi, Pra Somdej Lang Yunt, Pra Buddha Mongkol Mahalarp etc.

Maechee Bunreuan had used many auspicious materials to create these amulets including:

-Sacred powder from Wat Prachetupon
-Sacred powder from Wat Tritosdep
-Sacred powder ground from 108 varieties of Thai herbs
-Sacred powder ground from 108 species of Thai flowers
-Sacred powder collected from seven piers
-Sacred powder collected from seven ponds
-Sacred powder ground from ancient Dharma books made from Bailarn.
-Sacred powder collected from four locations, all related to Lord Buddha’s history on the Indian sub continent,
-Sacred white powder from Rachburi Province
